Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before renting your camper: booking, requirements, insurance and the trip itself.
Do I need previous experience driving a camper?
No previous experience is needed. Before you start your trip we will explain how the vehicle and its main systems work. We recommend driving with special care during the first kilometers, until you get familiar with the size and handling of the camper.
What is the best time of year to visit Chile by camper?
Chile has a lot to offer all year round. The best time to travel depends mainly on the areas you want to visit: conditions are very different if you want to explore the desert in the north or Patagonia in the south. The Atacama Desert is ideal to visit from April to October, and Patagonia from October to April.
How do I get to your office in Santiago?
We are located at Santa Marta de Liray, Parcela 15-2, Colina, on the outskirts of Santiago. Our office is about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport or downtown Santiago, depending on traffic. If you need us to arrange a transfer to or from our office, we will be happy to help.
How far in advance should I book?
If you want to travel during the high season (October to March), we recommend booking 6 months or more in advance, especially if you have specific dates or a particular camper in mind. Keep in mind that November is the first month in which our campers sell out. It is always advisable to stay flexible with your travel dates and with the pickup and drop-off locations, and to check camper availability before booking your flights. Outside the high season it is not necessary to book so far ahead, although we always recommend doing it early to secure the camper you prefer.
Is there a minimum number of rental days?
Yes, the minimum rental period depends on the season. Low season (April to September): minimum 7 days. High season (October to March): minimum 15 days.
What is the minimum age to rent?
To rent a camper, the minimum age is 23. To rent a vehicle with a roof tent (Altiplano), the minimum age is 21.
Do I need an international driving license?
You must present a valid driving license from your home country when picking up the camper. We also recommend carrying an international driving license as a complementary document during the trip, especially if you are planning an international journey.
Do I have to bring my own camping equipment?
No. We hand over our campers fully equipped, including a camping table and chairs for the outside. The equipment may vary by camper model: we recommend checking on our website the equipment included in the vehicle you want to book.
Can I charge electronic devices in the camper?
Yes. The camper has USB ports you can use to charge devices such as mobile phones. It also has a 220-volt outlet, which only works when the camper is connected to an external power source with the corresponding cable, for example at a campsite with an electric hookup. We recommend checking the type of plugs and adapters you will need for your devices before starting your trip.
If I rent a single cab vehicle, can people sit in the camper in the back?
No, this is not allowed under Chilean traffic law. All passengers must travel in the seats fitted for that purpose, wearing their seat belts, while the vehicle is moving. Riding inside the living area of the camper while driving is not allowed.
Is a 4x4 necessary?
We recommend traveling in a 4x4 vehicle to explore Chile, especially if you plan to visit areas with gravel roads or more demanding conditions. A 4x4 will let you travel with more comfort and safety when road conditions get harder. In any case, it is important to always adapt your driving to the road and weather conditions.
Can I only travel in Chile by camper, or also in other countries?
It is also possible to travel to other countries such as Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil with our campers. If you plan to cross a border, we need to know in advance so we can prepare the necessary documentation for the vehicle and the border crossing.
Can I pick up or drop off the camper somewhere other than Santiago?
Yes. We can arrange the pickup and/or return of the camper at a location other than Santiago, depending on your itinerary. Our operating points are Arica, Calama, Santiago, Puerto Montt, Balmaceda and Punta Arenas.
How many kilometers are included in the rental price?
The rental includes 200 kilometers per day for the campers and 250 kilometers per day for the Altiplano model (roof tent). If you need to drive more kilometers, ask us about our kilometer packages. If you are not sure how many kilometers your route will take, tell us your itinerary and we will be happy to help you calculate it.
Why does the tent open to one side only?
It is an intentional design. The Altiplano's tent is an Italian-made Maggiolina Columbus Variant Black Storm: Maggiolina is considered the best roof tent brand in the world. Its wedge opening was designed specifically for climates like Chile's, with strong wind and rain: by not opening fully upwards it offers much more wind resistance, with fully waterproof fabric and unmatched insulation.
What happens if I have an accident with the camper?
The first thing is to make sure everyone is safe. Then contact our 24/7 emergency phone number. We will help and assist you with everything needed to solve the situation in the best possible way.
What does the CDW insurance cover?
It covers material damage to the vehicle caused by fire, collision, rollover or theft, with a deductible of EUR 2,100 per event, regardless of whether the renter is responsible for the accident or not. We recommend reading the full insurance conditions to know the coverage, exclusions and applicable terms in detail.
When do I have to pay for my booking?
When making the booking you pay 30% of the total rental price. The remaining balance is due 46 days before the arrival date.
How can I pay?
You can pay in euros, Chilean pesos or US dollars, by bank transfer or credit card. For credit card payments we will send you a payment link where you can pay with your card. Please note that credit card charges can only be made in Chilean pesos (not in euros or dollars). Once the booking is confirmed, you will receive the corresponding payment instructions.
How is the guarantee taken to rent a camper?
The guarantee can only be provided by credit card: we do not accept guarantees in cash or by bank transfer. Make sure you have enough available credit on your card, and we recommend informing your bank in advance that you will be renting a camper in Chile. The guarantee will be blocked on your credit card before picking up the camper.
